Charles Darwin, born February 12th 1809 is best known as a naturalist, who developed a theory of evolution to best describe biological change throughout the universe. Darwin was a British biologist and scientist who embarked on a 5 year voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle, studying specimen and how they evolved over time. During Darwin's voyage, the HMS Beagle sailed through the Galapagos Islands where Darwin was able to observe and study 13 different species of finches. He noted the variations in color and beak size among species. Each bird had different variations of traits in which allowed it to survive in the environment they were immersed in. This led to the discovery of Natural Selection. Eventually Darwin had enough information and research complete that he was able to write a book explaining his theory of Evolution and the mechanism of evolution: Natural Selection.
At around the same time, another scientist named Alfred Wallace was developing the same theory as Darwin. For these two scientists it was a race to see who could publish their ideas first. Unfortunately, for Wallace his ship sank along with all his research and evidence on the ride back home, leaving him with nothing to prove. Darwin's voyage ended in 1836 but he did not publish his evidence until 1859. The book he published it in was called "The Origin of The Species" which was presented by both Darwin and Wallace. Although Wallace was there to present, Darwin got all the credit as he was the one with all of the evidence. In today's day and age, Darwin's theory of Evolution is now known as Gradualism.
