If you examine all three of these pictures closely you will discover that they all relate to one another. Charles Darwin (far right) otherwise known as the Father of Evolution came up with the theory of evolution through his mechanism of natural selection. The picture of the Galapagos Island finches on the far left were Darwin's research and evidence that proved evolution had taken place. All of the finches on the right hand side once came from an Ancestor Finch that you see on the left hand side. Through natural selection each and every offspring developed certain traits and/or genes to help it better suit its environment so it can survive, breed and reproduce its offspring to the next generation.
For example, some of the finches hunted bigger and stronger prey so they had to develop bigger and tougher beaks just to have a chance at survival, while others had smaller beaks to hunt smaller prey.
The picture in the middle are two different species of the rare peppered moths. These creatures under went natural selection as the smoke and burning of coal during the Industrial Revolution caused a genetic mutation that ended up providing them with a dark color to blend in with the heavily polluted environment. As a result the white moths were seen easily by predators and therefore had a harder time surviving and reproducing for the next generation.
Both of these creatures under went a full process of natural selection but Darwin was only able to explain one of them. The peppered moth theory was later proved during the 1950's.
